Best 360° cameras for street-level mapping in 2026

Choosing a 360° camera for professional street mapping involves more than resolution and price. The output format, how the camera handles stitching, and whether you can anonymise the imagery efficiently at your volume all factor into the total cost of a mapping operation. This guide focuses on cameras that produce equirectangular output compatible with Privacy Keeper, with benchmarks for anonymisation processing time.

All processing times below were measured on an NVIDIA RTX 3090 (GPU) and an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D (CPU). Peak VRAM usage is approximately 3 GB, so the GPU path runs on cards from 4 GB upward.

Mosaic 51 and Mosaic X — professional-grade, high resolution

The Mosaic 51 produces 12,288 × 6,144 equirectangular panoramas — one of the highest resolutions in the professional segment. That resolution is an asset for survey-grade mapping and point-cloud extraction, where detail at distance matters. Insta360 X5, X4, and X3 — versatile, widely available

The Insta360 X-series is the most common 360° camera in active street-mapping fleets, largely because of price, availability, and the mature export tooling. The X4 at 8,192 × 4,096 takes approximately 4.3 seconds per frame on GPU and 15 seconds on CPU. The X5 outputs at higher resolution; processing times scale proportionally with pixel count.

Insta360 Pro 2 and Titan — fixed-rig professional cameras

The Pro 2 and Titan are multi-lens fixed rigs used for high-end virtual tour production and precision mapping. They output stitched equirectangular files at resolutions up to 11K (Pro 2) and 11K–18K (Titan). Privacy Keeper supports both as generic equirectangular JPG input. GoPro MAX — compact, action-oriented

It is a practical choice for inspection workflows, short-run surveys, or operations where portability outweighs the need for maximum resolution. These are vehicle-mounted multi-camera rigs aimed at high-volume road surveying. They produce equirectangular output that Privacy Keeper supports as generic input. Processing times depend on the specific output resolution. What to prioritise when choosing

  • Resolution vs throughput. Higher resolution captures more detail but increases storage, transfer time, and processing time per frame. Match resolution to the actual use case — survey-grade mapping justifies 12K; routine inspection does not always.
  • Output format. Standard equirectangular JPG is the most portable format and the one Privacy Keeper expects. Confirm your camera exports in this format without requiring proprietary software for conversion.
  • Capture interval vs processing time. If you capture at high frequency (for example, every metre), the anonymisation pipeline needs to keep pace with capture volume. On GPU, Privacy Keeper can sustain several hundred Insta360 X4 frames per hour; plan your hardware accordingly.
  • Total cost of ownership. Camera price is one line. Add storage, a GPU workstation for offline anonymisation, and your time reviewing detections. For high-volume operations, the anonymisation infrastructure cost is often comparable to the camera cost.
